Volvo Car Corporation is releasing the first photographs of its all-new sportswagon, the Volvo V50.

With its revolutionary interior design, class-leading safety, powerful 5-cylinder engines and all-wheel drive, Volvo's newest wagon is the perfect companion for those who need a car capable of hauling all of the important stuff in their lives.

The all-new Volvo V50 will make its debut at the Bologna Motor Show on December 4th 2003.
The all-new Volvo V50 is the exciting five-door active lifestyle sportswagon that follows the introduction of the all-new S40 sport sedan, which made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year.
The all-new Volvo V50 replaces the current V40, which was launched in the United States in 1999. Sales of the all-new V50 sportswagon will begin in the U.S. in summer, 2004 as a 2005 model

The V50 Sportswagon will be produced alongside the S60 and All-New S40 at Volvo's plant in Ghent, Belgium, with first deliveries to UK showrooms expected late March or early April. Volvo plans to sell 74,000 V50 Sportswagons a year globally, including 8,000 in the UK.

On the road prices for the V50 Sportswagon range will be released later this month, but are expected to start from less than £17,500.

New Volvo's midrange wagons are only in the second year of their current design, so no big changes are due for a while. However, a lower-priced XC with front-wheel drive and fewer frills is being rumored for the near future, likely as a sales booster.

The V70 could use a boost. Despite the redesign, year-to-year sales in 2001 were off nearly 27 percent through the third quarter--and that on top of a near 22-percent drop in calendar 2000. A slumping economy didn't help, but Volvo executives must be worried about the trend, especially for such a young basic design that won't be replaced for several years.

The 2005 V50 is a 4-door, 5-passenger wagon, available in two trims, the 2.4i and the T5. New 2005 V50 is designed to appeal to people looking for one entry-luxury vehicle that can do it all.

The 2.4i is equipped with a standard 2.4-liter, I5, 168-horsepower engine. The T5 is equipped with a standard 2.5-liter, I5, 218-horsepower, turbo engine. A 5-speed automatic transmission is present in both trims.

one dealer told me:  The V50 will be in the $30s, probably $31-32k. Mileage will be the same as the V70.

I am about to purchase a v70 2.4, but now think about waiting.

this is a very cool pix of the v50:  http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/pdf/brochures/V50IntroBrochure2003USA.pdf
